Jen by Nick Dienst

Summary

It's never pretty when a relationship comes to an end. But how far is too far in the struggle to find closure? When a young man finds the love of his life isn't the person he imagined, he takes it into his own hands to create his own peace. This chilling account, told first-hand through the eyes of the desperate spurned lover, examines the fine line between want and obsession, rationality and insanity.

Excerpt

Pushing the already open door wider, I saw her figure behind the translucent curtain. There was no doubt in my mind it was her – I’d recognize that body anywhere. Furious, and with hot tears making their way down my cheeks, I ripped the curtain open. She turned, smiling, apparently thinking I was Track Star. I just stood there. Realizing I wasn’t whom she expected, but the other guy she had been sleeping with instead, Jen was speechless. In fact, she looked scared to death, like I was going to go off in a fit of rage and kill her on the spot. I couldn’t have laid a hand on her if I wanted to. Millions of thoughts and realizations whizzed through my head, and I could hardly see straight. I turned away, half shocked and half disgusted.

I didn’t ask why; this wasn’t the time or place.

“Get dressed,” I said over my shoulder. “We’ll talk about it at the house.” I won’t lie; I kicked Track Star in the face on my way out. Twice.

I don’t remember driving home. I was in a kind of haze, like nothing mattered but what just happened. The windshield might as well have been covered with a giant yellow banner for me to read over and over again: “JEN CHEATED ON YOU! SHE’S A LITTLE BITCH.” I remembered sitting in the living room once I arrived home, pouring myself a very large cup of Jack Daniels, and waiting on Jen.
